Temple of Israel is pleased to announce that ShalomFest’10, the second annual Jewish cultural and food festival, will take place on Sunday, March 21, 2010, from 11am to 6pm, with free entrance to the Campus of Temple of Israel at 400 Spring Forest Road. Temple of Israel is located off Haywood Road, one mile north of Haywood Mall in Greenville. The dream of bringing a Jewish cultural festival to the upstate of South Carolina became a reality in 2009, when Temple of Israel created ShalomFest. It was a tremendous success with more than 2,500 attendees representing a variety of races, religions and cultures. Food is what brings people to a cultural festival, and ShalomFest’10 will not disappoint. Traditional Jewish foods including brisket, challah, kugel, bagels, matzoh ball soup, corned beef on rye, latkes and knishes will be served. Delicious pastries, prepared by members of our congregation, will include mondel bread, hamantaschen, honey cake, black and white cookies, macaroons, strudel, and rugelach. This year we will also include some Israeli foods such as hummus, pita bread, and falafel. While savoring these delicacies, visitors will be able to participate and learn about different aspects of Jewish life. Throughout the Temple, educational rooms will be arranged for people to visit and learn about Judaism: the history, the Hebrew language, and the religion. These exhibits will include a Jewish wedding, a Bat Mitzvah, a Passover Seder, a party in a Sukkah, a demonstration of Hebrew writing, and a Holocaust Remembrance display. In addition, Upstate rabbis and Israeli officials will offer discussions of Judaism in relation to other religions as well as explaining the State of Israel and its politics. There will be live music and Israeli dancing, as well as Jewish crafts and games for children, a Bouncy House, and even an archeological dig. Don’t miss the opportunity to see a Torah scroll and watch cooking demonstrations by local chefs, included Rabbi Ribeye! For more information, please visit www.templeofisrael.org.
