The Center for Nonprofit Leadership at the University of South Carolina Upstate will continue its monthly nonprofit information lunch series “Friday Focus” with a book review and discussion led by guest speaker Dr. Ron Romine on October 17 from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. Anyone with an interest in nonprofit organizations, including board members, volunteers, employees and other interested parties, is invited to attend. Participants are asked to bring their own bag lunch to the event, to be held at the Community Education and Outreach Center, 325 S. Church St. in Spartanburg. Reservations are not necessary.
Starting at noon, Romine, professor emeritus of political science at USC Upstate, will lead a discussion centered around Forces of Good: The Six Practices of High-Impact Nonprofits, a book that examines a dozen nonprofit organizations from across the country and their six best practices for successfully introducing innovative solutions to pressing social problems, producing significant, sustained results and creating large-scale, systemic change. Published in 2007 by nonprofit consultants L.R. Crutchfield and H.M. Grant, the book delves into topics such as advocacy and service, the entrepreneurial spirit, the art of adaptation, the necessity to inspire evangelism, shared leadership, and nurturing networks among nonprofits. “This book is a helpful case study for the Upstate area nonprofits, large and small, as it examines the traits of some of the most visible, world-recognized organizations like Habitat for Humanity, to the smallest organizations with a local impact and scope,” says Romine. In addition to providing monthly educational programs and networking opportunities for area nonprofits, USC Upstate’s Center for Nonprofit Leadership offers a Bachelor of Arts in Nonprofit Administration, the only university or college in South Carolina offering this degree. The degree prepares graduates for careers in management and administrative positions within a wide variety of nonprofit organizations such as social services, youth activities, health, the environment and the arts.
