Furman Ranks Among Nation's Top Colleges in Freshman National Merit Scholars Enrolled


Furman University ranks among the nation�s top colleges for the number of National Merit Scholars the university enrolled in its 2005-06 freshman class.

According to an article in the January 27 issue of The Chronicle of Higher Education, Furman�s total of 32 National Merit Scholars in the freshman class ranked it 67th nationally. When calculating the percentage of Merit Scholars in the freshman class, the university�s ranking climbed to 32nd. Furman enrolled 689 freshmen this fall, and nearly five percent were Merit Scholars. The university�s total enrollment is 2,600.

The list in The Chronicle of Higher Education highlights the 94 colleges and universities enrolling 20 or more Merit Scholars in the class of 2009. Overall, 8,299 freshman Merit Scholars were enrolled in 365 institutions � 4,963 at 227 private colleges and 3,336 at 138 public institutions.

Other colleges enrolling at least 20 National Merit Scholars in this year�s freshman class were Clemson University (31), University of Richmond (27), Washington and Lee University (26), Amherst College (23), Williams College (23), Carnegie Mellon University (22) and Swarthmore College (20).

The distinction of Merit Scholar is given to the nation�s top high school students by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. Established in 1955, the National Merit Scholarship Program is an academic competition for recognition and scholarship.
