Announces Expansion in Oconee County, Investment Expected to Create 85 Jobs The South Carolina Department of Commerce and Oconee County today announced that Greenfield Industries Inc., a manufacturer of expendable cutting tools for both the consumer and industrial markets, will expand its facility in Oconee County. BE&K Building Group Part of Team to Construct Boeing’s 787 Assembly Facility in North Charleston The South Carolina Department of Commerce, the Greenville Area Development Corporation and the Upstate Alliance praised the news that a joint venture of the BE&K Building Group and Turner Construction (BE&K/Turner), with design partner BRPH, has been awarded the design-build contract for design and construction of The Boeing Company’s new 787 Dreamliner final assembly plant in North Charleston, South Carolina. The BE&K Building Group’s South Carolina regional office in Greenville will serve as the headquarters for the BE&K/Turner/BRPH design-build team, which is in the process of mobilizing the North Charleston site. Timken Announces New Distribution Center in Spartanburg County, Investment Expected to Generate 100 New Jobs The South Carolina Department of Commerce, the Economic Futures Group of Spartanburg County and Timken today announced that the company has selected a 300,000 square-foot leased facility in the Spartanburg County community of Duncan, S.C., as the location of a new distribution center. Timken has committed to invest $3 million and bring 100 new jobs to the area, in addition to 50 associates already employed by the company at an existing distribution facility in Spartanburg, who will transfer to the new facility in the Spartan Green Business Park as the company begins to occupy the space in December. South Carolina, North Carolina Strike Deal on Jocassee Gorges Access The two sister Carolina states have finally struck a deal over access to Crossroads Mountain, a remote section of the Jocassee Gorges in northern Oconee County. "Crossroads will still be the most difficult place to reach in our state," said Mark Hall, Jocassee Gorges project manager for the S.C. Department of Natural Resources (DNR), "but at least folks can get there reasonably and enjoy it, as it is such a special place." More details

CU-ICAR Recognized As Top Emerging Technology Research Center The Association of University Research Parks (AURP), an international organization representing university-related research parks from around the world, presented its Emerging Research/Science Park Award to the Clemson University International Center for Automotive Research (CU-ICAR) at the organization’s annual conference in Vancouver, British Columbia. Weather Observers Wanted in South Carolina The S.C. Department of Natural Resources' State Climatology Office and the National Weather Service are looking for volunteers across the state to measure and report the rain, snow, sleet or hail that falls on their homes, farms, or businesses. "This is a chance for people who have an interest in weather to be part of a project that collects valuable weather and climate data," said Hope Mizzell, South Carolina's State Climatologist.
